Co-director of SCALE Science
Nicole Holthuis is a Senior Research Associate at SCALE. She has over 20 years of experience in educational research, teacher professional development, curriculum design and evaluation. She has provided teachers across the country with professional development support related to curriculum and assessment development in science. Through her collaborative work with districts and science-related projects, she has created tools and processes to help teachers evaluate, develop, use, and revise NGSS-aligned performance tasks. Through her work at SCALE, she has co-developed NGSS-aligned evaluation criteria and scoring rubrics to support teachers in this work. She has managed and conducted numerous research and evaluation studies in science education including, but not limited to, the NASA-Funded Stanford Global Climate Change Education Project, the NSF-funded Stanford Stem Workforce Curriculum Project, UCSF Science and Health Education Partnership (City Science), and the Stanford Teacher Education Program. Dr. Holthuis has a BA in Biology from UC Davis and a California Secondary School Science Credential. She has a PhD in Science Education and a MA in Design and Evaluation of Educational Programs, both from Stanford University.
